This series of articles is designed to help you explore teaching and learning. It examines your own personal learning and explores how you as a dental nurse may be called upon to teach others. The first article in this series discusses how you can learn from textbooks.

How many years did you spend at school and college? Was it around 13 years or even more? Now undoubtedly you were taught to read, but what sort of books did you use? If it was like my education and that of my children, then the books you learnt on and were taught to read, were novels. They were stories; often quite wonderful stories, but stories nonetheless. They were books that started at page one and continued to the last page. The characters would be introduced at the beginning and the story, be it mystery, drama or fantasy would begin to unfold as you progressed through the book.
