Research into nurses’ and students’ educational needs

Dental nursing is evolving rapidly, with roles expanding. While this means that more advanced knowledge and skills are needed, evidence on the education required is sparse. New research projects aim to address this and to ensure nurse training meets the needs of the profession

The National Examining Board for Dental Nurses (NEBDN) is the largest provider of dental nurse qualifications in the UK. It was established in 1943 and held its first examination in the same year; examinations have taken place every year since with the exception of 1947 and 1948.

NEBDN has recognised that the literature on dental nursing is limited, especially in relation to nurses’ education and training. As the needs of the dental team continue to develop, particularly around direct access and continuing professional development (CPD) requirements, NEBDN will be conducting a number of research projects to ascertain the needs of the market from a career development point of view. This is to ensure NEBDN continues to provide high-quality assessments across a range of activities relevant to dental nurses now and in the future.
