Oral cancer is becoming more common. The number of oral and oropharyngeal cancer patients in the UK has recently increased by more than 30% (Cancer Research UK, 2014). Over 2,000 people in the UK die from this disease every year and the majority of these deaths could be prevented if the cancer was caught early enough (Cancer Research UK, 2014). Early detection is paramount because it can help to dramatically improve the chances of survival. The General Dental Council (GDC) has included Oral Cancer: Improving Early Detection as a recommended topic in its Continuing Professional Development (CPD) scheme, thus emphasising the importance of the early detection of oral cancer (GDC, 2012).
