Maxine Cooch is a physiotherapist and advises members of the Society of British Dental Nurses on good posture in clinic. Here, she considers the ‘multitude of sins’ that can cause harm to your body

In a cross-sectional study of 350 dental personnel, by Samat et al (2011), 52.4% of dental technicians experienced back pain. Risk factors included poor posture and arguably this could be said to be true of the whole team, including dental nurses – I can certainly see why, having observed a typical day in practice.

When initially asked to write this article, I did a quick ‘Google’ of ‘dental nurses working’ and here is what I found.

In Figure 1, take a look at how the dental nurse is sitting – head tilted to her right, left arm elevated, shoulders hunched forwards, back rotated to the left, need I go on? There are a multitude of sins here from a physiotherapist's perspective. I would anticipate:
