From dental nurse to dentist, Ian Toibin powers through his career to date – smashing stereotypes in his path

There was a certain amount of stigma attached. However, having overcome the teasing from my mates, I was proud to wear my tunic and start my dental nursing studies. I found my studies fascinating and loved the regional anatomy and physiology, especially in my dental nursing book. No more boring mathematics and Gaelic language I had to study in Ireland where I grew up. I had found a subject I loved studying. I qualified as a dental nurse, taking my exam a couple of years later in a large hall where I was the only male. But, times have changed – and I meet male dental nurses more and more frequently.
