I met recently with a client who has spent more than half his life building up two successful dental practices in the north of England. We discussed a raft of business issues and he spent much of the time making notes and tapping away on his calculator. Towards the end of our meeting he said, rather poignantly, that he wished he had realised far earlier in his career how important it is to understand exactly how his income relates to the tax he pays. Having an idea of how it all works is not enough—one needs to get involved.

I think he's right. We all need money and we all pay tax, so we should be very interested in both. It is your income and your tax bill, after all.
