Maximising your development – with photography

Phil Wander looks at how dental nurses can be included in the taking and making of high-quality clinical photographs – in assisting the clinician as well as taking digital photographs independently

Photography has now become an essential part of dental record keeping, and the whole practice team should be capable of taking high quality digital photographs of their patients, using a simple yet effective methodology vital to producing consistent results. Increasing numbers of dental nurses are taking a more pro-active role, in partnership with the dental practitioner, as well as fulfilling key requirements in their own qualifications1: Prior to statutory registration, extended clinical duties for dental nurses were often discussed, as it was felt further career opportunities for dental nurses were required. Since the inception of the GDC's Scope of Practice (SoP) document in 2009, extended duties courses are growing in number, providing opportunities for dental nurses to develop further knowledge and new skills. The National Examining Board for Dental Nurses (NEBDN) has a range of post-certificate qualifications2.
