Interdental cleaning – meeting the needs of the changing oral environment

This article discusses different scenarios affecting the mouth and how interdental cleaning can help to prevent oral disease

‘When is interdental cleaning not interdental cleaning? That is the question!’ It is when it is a part of whole mouth cleaning and not seen as a separate task that should be done but is not carried out. Encouraging patients to clean interdentally (Figure 1) is always something that needs careful negotiation in terms of getting a patient to ‘buy in’ to the fact that their toothbrushing technique is just not enough. This is tricky enough in itself, but what about when the changing needs of the mouth indicate that adding interdental cleaning to their normal oral hygiene routine is absolutely essential in terms of treatment and/or clinical outcome?
