One of the stated aims of the current and the preceding governments is to make the workplace more family friendly. The shared parental leave initiative will give parents more flexibility in their leave arrangements in the year following their baby's birth or adoption. The rules about taking shared parental leave are complex. As it is likely to have a big impact in dental nursing, this article sets out to explain who may claim the right, how it works, the processes to be followed and some guidance for managing requests. (NB ‘Ordinary’ parental leave is a different legal right and remains unchanged.)
