How NOT to be a dental nurse

5 mins read Workplace issues/your health
Dental nurse Eloise Meldrum talks timekeeping, masking a naturally miserable face and how to get along with your dentist – and your patients

1. How important is body language in patient communication?

In dentistry or any medical field where there are situations of anxiety and, at times, miscommunication, body language is important. Without words, people are still able to read one another by non-verbal communication via everything from small micro-expressions to huge gestures. Whether it is in your facial expression, your eye contact or clothes, remember to keep it professional.

2. Do I really have to introduce myself to every patient? They often ignore me

I always introduce myself to our patients when I am nursing, so they feel more relaxed and at ease with who will be assisting them that day. Also, they then know how to address you so they can talk to you. We have all had moments where patients have ignored us, but that’s okay – so long as you’re doing your utmost to make them feel comfortable, safe and in control, you’re doing the best job.
