Shaun Howe started his working life 32 years ago as a Grenadier Guardsman – his childhood was spent growing up in care homes. This year, aged 47, he qualified as a dental therapist, having studied BSc (Hons) with the University of Essex, which is only open to qualified dental hygienists. He has gone from Guardsman to dental clerk assistant, to dental hygienist and now a dental therapist. He also teaches dental nurses and is an NEBDN examiner. He had a ‘modest upbringing’ but wants others to realise that it is never too late to learn and gain new skills to benefit patients.
