The dental profession is ever changing, not least of all for dental nurses. Since the introduction of compulsory registration with the General Dental Council (GDC) in July 2008, the dynamics of the dental team have altered and there has been a large shift towards increasing the responsibilities of all dental care professionals. Upon registration dental nurses are expected to uphold GDC standards and to maintain their continuing professional development (CPD). CPD, currently set at 150 hours every 5 years, can be described as any activity which could reasonably be expected to advance your professional development as a dental care professional. Although the GDC recommends CPD is undertaken in the three core areas, radiography, medical emergencies and decontamination, they are very flexible as to how the other hours are spent and training in ‘additional skills’ may be of interest to you and your employer.
