Confidentiality – it’s essential

Andrew Collier discusses a fundamental requirement of patient trust

Dental professionals have the ethical and legal right to request relevant personal and clinical information from a patient. This also means there is an ethical and legal obligation to keep information confidential.

The General Dental Council (GDC), in its guidance in Standards for the Dental Team (para 4.2.1), states: ‘Confidentiality is central to the relationship and trust between you and your patients. You must keep patient information confidential.’

It would therefore be a breach to incorrectly disclose confidential patient information. In addition, patients may not provide the necessary clinical or personal information if they think it will be given to others without their knowledge.
