Dawn Walsh discusses why dental nurses should consider the ‘teaching’ role of oral health educator

It is well recognised that oral health has an important role in the general health and wellbeing of individuals. It is also of concern that significant inequalities in oral health exist across England DOH (2017), therefore all dentists and dental care professionals have a duty of care to promote health.

Advice given to patients should be holistic to promote general as well as oral health, and dental nurses are in an ideal position to engage with patients to deliver oral health interventions to patients. Oral diseases restrict activities in school, at work and at home, causing millions of school and work hours to be lost each year the world over. Moreover, the psychosocial impact of these diseases often significantly diminishes quality of life WHO, (2019).
