There was a flurry of media activity when news of a dog in a dental practice hit the internet. What sounds a cute story of puppy love does, in fact, have a more serious side. Here, senior dental nurse and pet therapist Jacci Plant talks anxious patients and an innovative solution.

Basil is a six and a half years old beagle and Jacci has had him since he was a puppy. She has worked for CDS-CIC, a forward-thinking service that operates eight clinics across Suffolk, for 17 years. Having already had some of the team learn Makaton, the easy-to-use sign language, as a way of reaching out tospecific patients, Jacci was aware new initiatives were welcomed.
