An overview of interdental cleaning aids

Interdental cleaning can remove plaque that toothbrushes cannot reach. Flossing is not the only method—other interproximal aids include tape, superfloss, interdental brushes, woodsticks and waterjets. Trudie Dawson explains how interdental aids work, and when and how they should be used

This article explores the different interdental cleaning aids available for patients. It also looks at the message provided by dental health professionals with regard to interdental cleaning aids and the impact this message may or may not have on patients’ motivation with regard to oral health.

As dental health professionals, we recognise the significance of an effective oral health cleaning regime to prevent caries and periodontal disease. Part of this regime includes brushing the teeth for a minimum of 2 minutes twice a day, using fluoride toothpaste and performing daily interdental cleaning. In addition, a patient should be advised to reduce their frequency of sugar consumption (Levine and Stillman-Lowe, 2004).
