All change!

5 mins read Communication
Dentistry, yet again is at the brink of another regulatory legislative change – this time it relates to data protection. Priya Sharma reports

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will be enforceable as of 25 May 2018. The regulation was passed through the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union and the European Commission on 27 April 2016. The past two years has served as a transition period, in which some of us may not have recognised and/or addressed the new regulation. Brexit will not preclude us from complying with GDPR. This regulation is not solely for dental practices and professionals. In fact, GDPR will affect all organisations that collect, process or store personal information.

Data Protection Act

The Data Protection Act (DPA) came into force in 1998 and the Data Protection Directive in 1995 – both of which will be superseded by the GDPR.
