A unique working environment

Josie Jackson talks to Louise Worman and Adelina-Rebecca Tirtopan about working in a paediatric dental practice.

Toothbeary is an exclusively paediatric dentist in Richmond, London, founded in 2008 by German dentist Nicole Sturzenbaum. In Germany, it is very common to have separate dental practices for children, so when Nicole relocated to England, she was keen to bring this concept with her.

There are many things that Toothbeary does differently to other dental practices to cater for the specific needs of its child patients, one of which is appointment times. With children having a short attention span, all appointments are kept as short as possible, typically running from 15-30 minutes, and never more than an hour. Prevention is central to the dentistry provided at Toothbeary, and it encourages patients’ experiences with dentistry to begin as early as possible – as soon as the first tooth erupts – just as the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry’s Dental Check by One campaign advocates.
