Former dental nurse and dental hygienist Sharon Collett talks about running her own practice

It has now been more than five years since the regulatory barriers were removed to allow dental care professionals (DCPs) direct access to patients; a move hailed as a major policy initiative.

For the first time, it gave patients the option to see a dental hygienist and therapist (carrying out their full scope of practice) without prescription and without them having to see a dentist first. The GDC granted this change in the regulations, following much petitioning from professional organisations at a time when there were also moves by the Department of Health to make greater use of the full skill set of the dental team.
