‘I’ve come so far from not knowing a mirror from a probe’ – dental nurse and self-confessed dental geek, Carmel Wood, talks us through this role

I’m often asked what my role at Andrea Ubhi Dentistry entails. A treatment co-ordinator is a role within a dental practice, which is becoming essential for practices offering private referral work. At one stage – especially when I started the role eight years ago – having a treatment coordinator was considered a luxury for a practice. When I was asked if I wanted this new role, I had no idea what it was, where to begin or what to do.

As a dental nurse, I was used to going into surgery every day and nursing. I thought I would miss nursing and not have any patient contact – which I knew I would miss immensely. How wrong I was! I had more time chatting to patients, without it being a one-way conversation. I also loved creating this role because, at the time, there wasn’t much information out there about being a treatment co-ordinator. I created a role to suit the practice I worked for and developed it over the years. Since starting with Andrea Ubhi Dentistry, however, I have seen how another practice develops the treatment co-ordinator role and we have merged ideas.
