Led by Health Education England, Building a Digital Ready Workforce is a programme of work that aims to bring people together in a culture that recognises the need to innovate and the role of digital in that innovation.

Its mission is to help everyone in the health and care sector in England, become comfortable enough with digital tools that they can contribute to that transformation and deliver the outcomes of their role quicker, easier, safer and at a higher level of quality.

The pace of change in the world is accelerating around us, due in no small part to the tremendous advances that have resulted from the 'digital revolution' that has been taking place over the course of our lifetimes. Research suggests that this is showing no signs of letting up with the rate of discovery through R & D rising significantly across all industries. The question is, how does dentistry fit into all of this? Is healthcare the next industry to be 'disrupted' by digitisation?

The technology is here to stay but we cannot assume that people will simply adapt to a new digital landscape as it is laid in front of them.

The workforce is widely recognised as the limiting factor when it comes to digitisation and strategic freedom of an organisation. In order for dentistry to benefit from advances in technology, we need to be mindful that a workforce with a different skillset will be required in the future and that phase shift needs to begin sooner rather than later.

Working in conjunction with the 'Building a Digital Ready Workforce' programme, the event aims to raise awareness of the importance of digital literacy for the dental team. This event is part of a broader project in which we hope to involve all members of the dental team to deliver the following:

  • Raising awareness of digital enablers within dentistry
  • Working with practice principals, dentists and DCPs in primary care on digital projects and GDPR compliance
  • Developing a GDPR toolkit for General Dental Practice
  • Supporting DCPs to share digital innovations within their primary care community
  • Supporting DCPs to organise CPD events on cyber security and GDPR
  • Working withdental organisations and networks to improve digital literacy
  • Supporting Dental Core Trainees and Foundation Dentists to develop digital enablers in practice
